Established in 1977
Ma Simes Surf Hut was founded in 1977 from a shed in the bottom of the garden of the house of Ma, situated at Whitesands Bay, St Davids, Pembrokeshire. The name was invented in 1979 on a drunken September night around an open fire in Anglet, France, but that is another story!
In the beginning the idea was to get hold of wax and leashes for her very enthusiastic surfing children and their friends. Soon the shed became stocked with sufboards, wetsuits, accessories and clothing and without any forward planning and almost by mistake, the business was founded.
In the 1980′s Ma became a surfing legend at the age of 65, without even managing to get her feet wet!! She was a fountain of knowledge about all things surfing and was proud to say “if we haven’t got it, we can get it” as well as “If it’s not tight it doesn’t fit”. She went on to import Piping Hot wetsuits direct from Australia and moved the shop into the centre of St Davids.
Today, even though she has caught the ultimate heavenly wave in the sky, the shop carries on in the High Street, St Davids. We are proud to say we are one of the largest stockists of surfboards and wetsuits in Wales. With the online shop linked directly to the shop floor anything that is on the website is also stocked in the shop. We sell surfboards from all of the top manufacturers including Surftech, Rusty, Firewire, Channel Islands, Cortez, DHD and Bic. Summer and Winter wetsuits from Alder, C-skins , Billabong, Ripcurl, Excel Patagonia and O’Neill. Mens and Womens clothing from all the top brands including Quicksilver, Roxy, Billabong, Ripcurl, Lost, Volcom, Hurley, Finisterre and our own exclusive branded Ma Simes Gear, plus accessories from FCS, Sexwax, Balin and anything else you could possibly want.
Ma Simes is one of Wales’ biggest and longest established surf shops. Our surf reports come direct from the beach and our experience in the surf business, surf reporting, surf hire, surf lessons and surf sales are ‘unsurfpassed’! We are simply ‘the best in the west’.
