Kelly Slater Withdraws from Billabong Rio Pro, Round 1 Draw Amended

Kelly Slater Withdraws from Billabong Rio Pro, Round 1 Draw Amended.

Kelly Slater (USA), 40, reigning 11-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 1, has withdrawn from the Billabong Rio Pro following a heel injury sustained in Java.

“I injured the inside of my left heel in Java and then re-opened it again the following week at Cloudbreak,” Slater said. “It became infected and I flew to Australia to get it treated and stitched in hopes of making it to Rio, if not for Round 1, at least for Round 2. I’ve been in the water since getting it stitched and while I can go straight, I can’t do turns at all right now so I’ll have to pull out of Rio. It’s unfortunate, but I’m just going to focus on healing up as soon as possible right now. Good luck to all the competitors in Brazil and I’ll be watching online.”

Slater has been replaced by Willian Cardoso (BRA), 26.

Event No. 3 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Billabong Rio Pro will recommence this year’s race for the ASP World Title, following wins by Taj Burrow (AUS), 33, on the Gold Coast and Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, at Bells Beach. With Slater’s withdrawal, the current frontrunner spot on the ASP WCT ratings is up for grabs in Rio de Janeiro.

Dusty Payne (HAW), 23, has also withdrawn from the Billabong Rio Pro, citing an ankle injury that has kept him out of the water all season. Payne will be replaced by fellow Hawaiian Frederick Patacchia (HAW), 30.

Event wildcards for the Billabong Rio Pro are Tomas Hermes (BRA) and Peterson Crisanto (BRA).

When men’s competition commences, up first will be Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, Bede Durbidge (AUS), 29, and Jadson Andre (BRA) 22, in Heat 1 of Round 1.

The Billabong Rio Pro will run from May 9 – 20, 2012 and will be webcast LIVE via www.billabongpro.com

Mick Fanning Claims Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Slater Takes ASP Ratings’ Lead

Mick Fanning Claims Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Slater Takes ASP Ratings’ Lead. Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, has claimed the 2012 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Ranger over reigning 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 40, in offshore three-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) waves at Bells Beach.

Event No. 2 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach culminated in dramatic fashion today with pundits calling it the “best Final in event history.”
The Australian and American went blow for blow throughout the 35-minute bout, exchanging massive scores and the lead several times before the dust settled.
“I’m so pumped,” Fanning said. “Kelly (Slater) did that Hail Mary for the 10 and I thought, ‘oh, here we go.’ I just caught waves and I’m stoked it all paid off. I’m really at a loss for words and I’m just pumped. It doesn’t get any sweeter. The crowd’s been amazing with the whole amphitheater and the history that comes with it. I always picture this event and have had some seconds over the years, so to get this one, I’m so pumped.”
Today’s win marked Fanning’s 14th elite tour win and his first Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach win since 2001. It also brings the Australian’s record with Slater closer to even at 7 to Kelly’s 8 in their heat matchup history.
“I’m just stoked because it’s been so long,” Fanning said. “It doesn’t seem strange that it’s taken so long to win another one when you’ve got guys like Joel (Parkinson), Jordy (Smith) and Kelly (Slater) on tour and I usually come up just a bit short. Usually against Joel, but I got him today!”
This year’s Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach was dedicated to the memory of three-time event winner Michael Peterson (AUS), who tragically passed away last week, and the Final was preceded by a minute’s applause in memory of the great Australian.
“I was on the verge of tears out the back,” Fanning said. “I just sat out the back before the Final and just took in the whole crowd. It’s not everyday you’ve got the crowd cheering and I could have paddled in after that, but I’m glad I didn’t though.”
Although finishing an uncharacteristic 13th at his homebreak on the Gold Coast, today’s victory rockets Fanning to No. 3 on the ASP World Championship Tour rankings heading into the next event.
“I had a bit of a meltdown at the first event,” Fanning said. “I knew everything was working well. I knew I just needed to go and simple things up. I took the headphones off and had a lot more fun. I knew there were going to be a lot of waves with the tide dropping out and I guess I just wanted to be on the good ones. You’ve got to just believe in your judgment and I’m stoked.”
Slater fought back from an early combination situation with an incredible full-rotation aerial for a Perfect 10. The legendary natural-footer backed it up moments later with an 8.07 to take the lead, but would only hold it briefly after an assault from Fanning.
“I was moving around trying to get active and I was just finding my feet,” Slater said. “I knew Mick (Fanning) was going to be real patient. I knew he got that start and then I tried to talk to him and he put his serious head on and pissed me off, so I thought I’d throw a big rotator on him and it wasn’t enough. That was pretty exciting for me. Even when he had the 9 and 8-something, I had a feeling I was in it. I felt like something good was going to come my way and it started to. I had one more chance and that was about it. I knew it was going to be a bit of a struggle with the waves out there, with the long intervals and long lulls, but that’s just the way it goes.”
Slater’s Runner-Up finish moves him back to the No. 1 spot on the ASP World Championship Tour ratings.

Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, defending Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach winner, was a standout throughout the entire event, dominating the Bells Bowl and Rincon sections with an unmatched affinity. However, the stylish natural-footer would fall to Gold Coast stable mate Fanning in the Semifinals despite an impressive array of scores.

“I told Mick (Fanning) to ring that thing,” Parkinson said. “He beat me and I hope he beats Kelly (Slater). No one is more deserving. He’s come close so many times and put more time in here than anyone. If it wasn’t me, I couldn’t think of anyone else I’d want to see win it. We’ve had lots of battles and today I couldn’t get a good turn in. I was hoping for more waves and I was hoping to surf it out rather than sit it out. It’d be great to see Mick win it today. He’s a Kirra boy and he deserves it in memory of him, Michael (Peterson) was such a Kirra legend and Mick too, and I couldn’t think of a more fitting end to the day.”
Parkinson’s Equal 3rd today bumps him to No. 4 on the ASP World Championship Tour ratings heading into the next event.
Jeremy Flores (FRA), 23, posted two massive wins today over lethal rookie John John Florence (AUS), 19, and form goofy-footer Owen Wright (AUS), 22. The young Frenchmen dissected the Bells walls with unmatched precision, but a priority interference in his Semifinal bout with Slater would see Flores bundled out with an Equal 3rd.
“I’m disappointed with the result,” Flores said. “I feel like I was surfing really well and I didn’t agree with the interference call. That’s surfing though so I just have to brush it off and focus on the next one.”

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am and assess conditions for a possible 7:30am start to the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Fiesta.

Volcom bring Fiji back for 2012

Volcom bring Fiji back for 2012. The world’s best surfers are midway through the Australian leg of the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour and fans have already born witness to unprecedented levels of high-performance surfing, but come June, the Volcom Fiji Pro will send the ASP Top 34 to the idyllic isles of Fiji where they’ll do battle in the ultimate Dream Tour venues of Cloudbreak and Restaurants.

The fourth stop on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Volcom Fiji Pro will return the world’s very best surfers to one of the planet’s very best surfing venues. The Volcom Fiji Pro will be Volcom’s inaugural ASP World Championship Tour event.

“We are starting to get real excited about the event as June is just around the corner,” Brad Dougherty, Volcom VP of surfing, said. “Fiji is a very special place and we are ecstatic to now be part of the WCT. The Volcom Fiji Pro exemplifies the ‘Dream Tour’ concept that we believe so much in.”

The Volcom Fiji Pro compliments a 2012 ASP World Championship season that has the ASP Top 34 contesting premium venues in Australia, Brazil, Tahiti, USA, France, Portugal and the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

“Volcom’s decision to bring the world’s best surfers back to one of the most iconic locations on the planet provides the perfect addition to ASP International’s solid stable of elite events in 2012,” Matt Wilson, ASP International Contest Director, said. “Volcom have planted their flag at two of the very best waves on the planet with their ASP 5-Star at Pipeline and now the Volcom Fiji Pro and it’s something that the surfers, the industry, the media and the fans are all very excited about.”

The ASP Top 34, the world’s elite campaigners in the hunt for the ASP World Title, are ecstatic about returning to Fiji after a three-year hiatus. Gold Coast stable mates Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, 2011 ASP World Runner-Up, and Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, two-time ASP World Champion, are particularly eager to reunite with their respective extended families as well as Fiji’s incredible surf.

“I am so amped to be going back to Fiji,” Parkinson said. “It is my favorite place of all time. The waves, the people and the food – it epitomizes what the ASP Dream Tour is and should be. I can’t wait for the event.”

“I’ve really missed the Fiji event,” Fanning said. “Cloudbreak and Restaurants are, without a doubt two of the best waves on earth so having Volcom bring an event back to Fiji is insane. I’ve never had a bad trip to Fiji. The place rules! The locals are classic, the fishing is awesome, the waves are perfect and I’m stinging to get back there!”

Adriano de Souza (BRA), 25, current ASP World No. 2, is leading the South American charge in 2012, and the well-versed natural-footer is relishing the opportunity to return to Fiji – a locale where he has had success in past seasons.

“I had a blast at the last event we had in Fiji,” De Souza said. “I got 3rd place and I had a great time in Tavarua. For sure, I can’t wait to see the all crew from Tavarua again. Both waves, Cloudbreak and Restaurants, are amazing. I hope this event pushes other companies to run contests in similar venues as this is what surfing is all about.”

While tour veterans will be looking to dig their claws back into the Fijian perfection of Cloudbreak and Restaurants, the 2012 rookie class will get their first crack at these South Pacific reef passes.

“I’m really psyched that Fiji is back on the schedule for my rookie year on the ASP World Championship Tour,” Kolohe Andino (USA), 17, 2012 ASP Top 34 rookie, said. “I grew up watching my heroes battle it out at Cloudbreak and Restaurants, and to have the opportunity to join the tour, and get to compete there myself is really why I do this – to live out my dreams.”

The Volcom Fiji Pro will take place from June 3 – 15, 2012.

The next stop on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour will be the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Ranger from April 3 – 14, 2012.

Taj Burrow surfing in Fiji

Taj Burrow (AUS), 33, current frontrunner on the ASP World Championship Tour rankings, will battle for the throne this June at the Volcom Fiji Pro.
